“We are all broken, that’s how the light gets in.”

What’s True Out There?

People often think Ernest Hemingway said “We are all broken, that’s how the light gets in”, but that just isn’t true. It’s the perfect example of internet misinformation.

Too often, ideas and words on the internet swirl around and create wrong ideas on the internet. Why? Because no one polices or checks the truthfulness of what people write or say out there. Ernest Hemingway never wrote those words, but Canadian singer and songwriter, Leonard Cohen came really close. Cohen wrote something similar in his lyrics for the song, Anthem, which released in 2012.

“There is a crack, a crack, in everything. That’s how the light gets in.

–Leonard Cohen
