The Author

Dr. Racelis (Doc R) was born in Alabama. She grew up on a farm managed by her grandparent. Her childhood was spent on horseback, in magnolia trees and porch swings. She still enjoys fresh muscadines and blackberries when she can find them locally in Georgia.

“My grandmother gave birth to her children in her home. If you saw a doctor, it meant you were dying.”

Without access to some of the most basic health care needs, her drive to learn about medicine led to her earning a BA in Philosophy and a BS in Biology. As the field of genetics began to expand, she continued her quest for knowledge and completed her Ph.D. in Medical Genetics.

“I was raised with a big dose of humble, but at my last job, a colleague started calling me Doc R and it stuck.”

After receiving her doctorate in Medical Genetics, she began a career in the medical device field. For almost 15 years, she trained as a clinical chemist and fell in love with the laboratory sciences. She has worked for Quest Diagnostics, Siemens, and Becton Dickinson. She is also a member of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, the Endocrine Society, the American Society for Quality, and the American Medical Writers Association. Currently, she enjoys her career as a freelance medical writer.
