The Author

Doc R, Alicia, was born in Alabama. She grew up on a farm managed by her grandparents. Her childhood was spent on horseback, in magnolia trees, and on porch swings. Alicia still enjoys fresh Georgia muscadines and blackberries in the summer.

“My grandmother gave birth in her home. If you saw a doctor, it meant you were dying.”

Without access to some of the most basic healthcare needs, her drive to learn about medicine led to a BA in Philosophy, a BS in Biology, and a PhD in Medical Genetics.

“I was raised with a big dose of humble. At my last job, a colleague started calling me Doc R, and it stuck.”

After receiving her doctorate in Medical Genetics, she began a career in the medical device field. For almost 15 years, she trained as a clinical chemist and fell in love with the laboratory sciences. She has worked for Quest Diagnostics, Siemens, and Becton Dickinson. She is also a member of the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) and the Endocrine Society. Alicia serves as the Southeast Chapter secretary for the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) and actively volunteers for the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA). Currently, she enjoys her career as a freelance medical writer in the sunny state of Georgia.
